Presented with the help of my friends:

My first week of planned base training

Summary: I had a stressful week emotionally and physically. I’ve previously written about testing the TR “aggressive” training plan for a few weeks, and if the second week has as many high intensity efforts during my “base” phase, I will rethink that approach.

“TR” = TrainerRoad. I don’t have an affiliation with TrainerRoad.

Monday: It was an ordinary day, and I did my strength training before work. My routine right now includes low weights at a high repetition with an emphasis on balance, mobility and strength in my hips.

Tuesday: This was a really shitty day. My Grandmother passed away the night before. We were close, and it’s going to take a while for our family to process this loss. When I got around to getting on the BikeErg to train, I felt awful. TR planned a high intensity workout for me, but I was too sad to do anything with gusto (except crying, I put a lot of effort into crying). The TR workouts can be adjusted down from 100% while working out, and I took advantage of this to hit what felt right at 76% of plan.

Wednesday: I took a much needed mental and physical break, spending the day at home with my husband and our snuggly little puppy, Nico.

Thursday: My husband and I both got our indoor training rides in, and I took advantage of our home gym to do my strength training routine. I’m highly committed to that routine! The TR ride was another round of high intensity interval training, and I felt up for the challenge.

Friday: Yes, strength and mobility!

Saturday: This workout was hard… 90 minutes of high intensity interval training “over and under” my Functional Threshold Power (FTP). The concept, from what I am coming to understand, is that working at intervals around FTP extends the time an athlete is actively working at their FTP, and because there is rest between each set it isn’t as stressful as holding FTP for a longer period of time. I nailed the workout, then TR immediately downgraded Sunday to a rest day… thank goodness.

I may have also overdone it this week by skinning up and skiing down Stowe on Saturday… The snow was insanely good so early in the season, and spending time outside with friends was exactly what I needed after experiencing a big loss earlier this week.
