Many of my experienced cycling friends and mechanics at Vermont Bicycle Shop recommended using the app TrainerRoad to prepare for the 2026 season. Another option I’ve seen friends use on Strava is the app Zwift.
My research into the two has distinguished these key differences: TrainerRoad can build a training plan with AI that automatically adjusts your workouts based on your performance while Zwift has a gamer, social feel to indoor training. Both apps are subscription-based at a comparable price point of about $20/month. Either a speed sensor or smart trainer connected to the device running each app is necessary to collect data for training plan adjustments (TrainerRoad) or race simulations (Zwift).

TrainerRoad is the best option for me since I have a specific race goal and I’m not already working with a coach to develop my training plan. I also have a Concept2 BikeErg, so I’ll be able to take advantage of its power data collection to use the app.
Note: I don’t have an affiliation with either TrainerRoad or Zwift. I am employed by Concept2 as a member of their Finance team separate from this training and blog project.
